Wandering Prevention & Detection
Nine percent of all the people requiring a SAR response in New Zealand suffer from dementia. The number of people with dementia is expected to double over the next twenty years. It is reasonable to assume that the number of wandering incidents is going to significantly increase.
Wandering has a significant cost to our society in terms of:
- Trauma and some fatalities for those who wander
- Stress, anxiety and upset for caregivers, families and rest home personnel
- Time, financial cost and disruption to Police and Search and Rescue volunteers
- There are well-proven practical systems for preventing unsafe wandering in the first place. If it occurs then there are established systems for locating the wanderers as soon as possible.
